Ballerup is a leading municipality for businesses and is located 15 km Northwest of Copenhagen City in the Greater Copenhagen Region. It has the highest number of private jobs pr. habitants in Denmark and the businesses located in Ballerup are the largest contributors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Denmark. The municipality has approx. 48,500 inhabitants and 46,000 jobs, whereas 35,000 of them are in the business sector. Approx. 36,000 commute every day to the municipality to work.

The testsite Lautrup is often described as the Danish Silicon Valley due to its high concentration of ambitious TECH businesses and skilled IT/knowledge specialists in combination with The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and a regional high school with strong technology profile. 3,500 students daily visit the area.

A masterplan outlines the ambitions of growing the 250 hectares (2.5 km²) business area from its present 20,000 workplaces by 25% by 2030. The test site provides a demonstration of a high capacity spending service fully integrated with the existing public transport service, effectively connecting with the nearby multimodal public transport hub (S-trains, high-speed buses, local buses and shared e-bikes).
