As part of the SHOW project’s ongoing engagement and co-creation activities, ERTICO and the European Passengers’ Federation (EPF) teamed up with Belgium’s Open Summer of Code (OSoC) to develop a cutting-edge concept for the future of urban mobility. This collaboration led to the creation of the SHIFT mobility hub, a transformative vision aimed at revolutionizing how we move within cities.
From 1 to 25 July, a team of three talented students—specializing in design, technology, and innovation—collaborated under the guidance of an experienced coach to bring the SHIFT concept to life. Through expert interviews, brainstorming, and research, they addressed common mobility challenges, identified emerging trends, and crafted a visionary document outlining the functional architecture of the future mobility hub, designed for both passenger and parcel transport.
The SHIFT Mobility Hub: A glimpse into the future
The SHIFT team presented a comprehensive blueprint for the future mobility hub. This document details the hub’s functional system architecture, user personas, screens for a potential Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) app, and the “SHIFT Criteria for a Future Hub,” emphasizing accessibility, safety, comfort, efficiency, sustainability, technological integration, and versatility. The Mobility Hub SHIFT proposes is a dynamic ecosystem inspired by nature and powered by advanced technology. This hub is about more than just transportation—it’s about connectivity and efficiency, seamlessly integrating various modes of transit, including autonomous shuttles, electric bikes, and high-speed trains, ensuring smooth transitions for passengers and parcels. Interactive screens and AI assistants guide users, while green spaces offer moments of calm.
At the heart of the SHIFT concept is sustainability. Powered by renewable energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, and kinetic floors, the hub also incorporates rainwater harvesting and recycling systems, promoting eco-friendly practices. SHIFT embodies a commitment to a future where technology and nature coexist harmoniously.
The SHIFT Mobility Hub explores a new era of urban mobility, underscoring the importance of inclusion to ensure that everyone benefits from the future of transportation.
